Incandescent : meaning
1. Emitting light as a result of being heated
2. Full of strong emotion, passionate
As a woman who is in her mid-fifties, I can absolutely identify with both the meanings of the word incandescent.
I’ve always said that ageing is a privilege that is denied to many and that we should celebrate every year, every worry and laughter line time and life gifts to us! I think, when we are young, we don’t always know what we want and are easily distracted; but every experience, relationship, life event moves us closer to knowing what we want and need in our life by process of elimination and learning. So, it has been in my life.
Like a piece of art those experiences form and create who we are and how we react and interact with the world. Sometimes we are bright shining lights for ourselves and others. At other times we fall into darkness, silence; a whirlpool of anxiety and emotion that feels overwhelming.
In these times of overwhelm I seek solace in nature, music, my creativity and the written word. One of my favourite quotes is …..
“I am out with lanterns, looking for myself”
Emily Dickinson
P.S.
I recently discovered that this line is from a letter Emily wrote to a friend after she had moved house and she was mourning the fact that she had lost her hat, coat and best shoes in the move and was indeed “out with lanterns, looking for myself” for those items!
